Iron Infusions for Low Iron and Iron Deficiency

Low iron can affect how you feel and function day to day, particularly when it leads to symptoms like fatigue, weakness or shortness of breath. The team at Chadstone Road Clinic provides iron infusion therapy for eligible patients who may benefit from support restoring their iron stores.

An iron infusion is designed to deliver iron directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous drip (IV). It may be recommended if taking oral iron hasn't helped, caused unwanted side effects, or when your doctor determines that intravenous iron is a suitable treatment for you.

Who May Benefit From Iron Infusions?

There are many reasons you may become iron deficient. Some people experience regular or chronic blood loss, such as through heavy periods, while others may have difficulty absorbing enough iron through their diet or oral iron supplements.

Your doctor will assess your symptoms, medical history, and recent iron studies to determine whether an iron infusion may be appropriate for you. Iron infusions may be considered for people experiencing:

  • Iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia
  • Low iron stores identified through blood tests
  • Chronic tiredness or fatigue associated with iron deficiency
  • Regular or chronic blood loss, including heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Difficulty tolerating oral iron, including gastrointestinal side effects
  • Poor absorption of iron, including in some gastrointestinal diseases
  • An increased need for iron that can't be met through oral supplements
  • Low haemoglobin due to iron deficiency, where intravenous treatment is considered appropriate

The Potential Benefits of Iron Infusion Therapy

For eligible patients, an iron infusion aims to provide a way to deliver iron directly into the bloodstream without relying on absorbing it through the digestive system.

Depending on your circumstances, benefits of the service may include:

  • An alternative to oral iron when you can't tolerate tablets or they haven't helped to improve your iron stores
  • Directly delivering iron intravenously into the bloodstream
  • Convenience, with the infusion itself usually taking little more than one hour (though this varies by patient)
  • Medical supervision throughout the infusion and post-infusion monitoring
  • Individual assessment and support from our experienced clinical team

How Do Iron Infusion Appointments Work?

1. Consultation and Assessment

Your doctor will review your medical history, symptoms, and recent iron studies to assess whether iron infusion therapy may be suitable for you. Other relevant results, such as haemoglobin or liver function test results, may also be considered depending on your medical condition and circumstances.

2. Your Iron Infusion Appointment

If you are eligible for an infusion, we'll arrange your appointment. This usually involves giving you a prescription for the iron that we will administer intravenously through a drip, allowing it to enter your bloodstream directly. We will give you instructions on when and where to fill your prescription before your infusion appointment.

3. Monitoring and Aftercare

Our team will monitor you during and after the procedure. Your doctor will explain what to expect after your infusion, possible side effects, and when you'll need to have follow-up blood tests to determine the infusion's level of success.

Questions People Ask Us About Iron Infusions

  • How will I know if I need an iron infusion?

We don't recommend iron infusions based on symptoms alone. Your doctor will assess your recent iron studies in your blood tests alongside your symptoms, medical history, and the possible cause of your low iron. If your iron deficiency coincides with symptoms such as chronic tiredness, weakness, or shortness of breath, or occurs without a likely possible cause such as heavy periods or not enough red meat consumption, we'll typically recommend further assessment before we decide on the most appropriate treatment.

  • Do I need to get a blood test before an iron infusion?

Yes, only recent iron studies help guide your doctor in assessing your iron stores and determining whether an infusion may be beneficial for you. Depending on your circumstances, we may also review other blood test results. Contact our clinic before your appointment if you are unsure whether your existing results are recent enough.

  • Why would I need an iron infusion instead of iron supplements?

Oral iron is commonly used to manage iron deficiency, but it isn't suitable for everybody. Some patients experience nausea or other gastrointestinal side effects, while certain medical conditions can limit iron absorption. Your doctor can assess whether trying or continuing oral supplements or having intravenous iron is more appropriate for you.

  • How long does an iron infusion take?

How long the appointment takes can vary depending on the treatment prescribed and the monitoring required. You may need to allow around 1-2 hours or longer for the overall appointment, including preparation, administration, and post-infusion monitoring. Our clinic can advise you what to expect when arranging your appointment.

  • Are there side effects of iron infusions?

Side effects may occur with iron infusions. These may include headache, nausea, or temporary reactions during or after treatment. More serious reactions can occur in rare cases. Your doctor will discuss relevant risks with you before the procedure, and we aim to minimise these as much as possible, such as with monitoring during and after your infusion.

  • What causes low iron?

Low iron can have many causes. Examples include regular blood loss, heavy menstrual bleeding, gastrointestinal diseases that affect absorption, increased iron requirements such as during pregnancy or breast feeding or in athletes, or not getting enough dietary iron. Because iron deficiency can sometimes be related to an underlying medical condition, aiming to identify and manage the cause is an important part of treatment.

  • How much do iron infusions cost, and is there a Medicare rebate?

The cost of an iron infusion can depend on the consultation, treatment, and your individual circumstances. Medicare rebates may apply to eligible services, and there may be out-of-pocket fees for some patients. Please contact us for current information about iron infusion costs, Medicare rebates, and any applicable fees before booking.

  • What is iron deficiency anaemia?

Iron deficiency anaemia occurs when low iron levels affect the body’s ability to produce enough haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. It can cause many symptoms such as fatigue (particularly chronic tiredness), along with weakness, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
