A Different Approach to Your Care
Have you been experiencing pain that just won't go away? Medical acupuncture is a drug-free, holistic approach many people use to manage their pain. If your GP agrees this may be beneficial for you, it’s usually much less scary than you may think! Your GP will insert sterile, fine needles into specific points on your body in an effort to help ease tension, pain, and stress.
At
Chadstone Road Clinic, our highly experienced team offers medical acupuncture as part of your integrated care approach to support your overall health.

What to Expect From Medical Acupuncture
1. Initial Consultation
Our skilled practitioners will review your medical history and current concerns to develop a tailored treatment plan that aims to address the root cause of your pain.
2. Needle Placement
Your practitioner will assess the target area and determine the appropriate acupuncture points before gently inserting the needles. Some people may feel a twinge when the needle goes in, but
many report it’s not painful.
3. Acupuncture Treatment
The needles stay in place for around 25–35 minutes. During this time, your practitioner may make mild adjustments, such as pushing or twisting, in an effort to stimulate the nerves.
4. Needle Removal
At the end, they will remove the needles, and your medical acupuncture session is complete.
Common Medical Acupuncture Questions
Is medical acupuncture part of general practice medicine?
Medical acupuncture at Chadstone Road Clinic is provided by a registered GP as part of our general practice medicine services, combining medical training with acupuncture technique.
What's the difference between cupping and acupuncture?
When performing acupuncture, your practitioner will insert fine needles into specific points on your body. With cupping, the practitioner places suction cups on your skin in an effort to support circulation and reduce muscle tension.
At Chadstone Road Clinic, our priority is to assist you in treating your concerns with the approach that best suits your individual needs.
What is the difference between Medical Acupuncture and Dry Needling
Medical Acupunture
- Performed by medically trained doctors.
- Treats a wide range of conditions including chronic pain, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, menopause symptoms, and musculoskeletal disorders.
- Based on medical diagnosis and evidence-based acupuncture principles.
- Takes a whole-person approach as part of comprehensive medical care.
Dry Needling
- Usually performed by physiotherapists and other allied health professionals.
- Primarily treats muscle pain, trigger points, and movement dysfunction.
- Based on Western anatomy and trigger point therapy.
- Focuses mainly on relieving muscle tightness and pain.
In short: Dry needling is mainly for muscle problems, while medical acupuncture is a broader medical treatment that can help manage many pain and non-pain conditions.
Does medical acupuncture hurt?
Most patients describe acupuncture as causing a mild pinching sensation rather than pain. The needles used are very fine, and any discomfort is usually minimal and brief.
Speak with your practitioner if you have any concerns before your session.
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person, depending on your individual health needs and goals. For most conditions you need about 6 sessions to get improvement .Your practitioner will discuss a suitable plan with you during your consultation.
How should I prepare for my acupuncture session?
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. Depending on your condition and treatment plan, acupuncture needles may be inserted into various parts of the body, including the head, ears, hands, abdomen, back, legs, and ankles.
Loose-fitting clothing makes it easier for your doctor to access the treatment areas while ensuring you remain comfortable throughout your session.
