Why Do I Need Travel Vaccinations?

When travelling overseas, you may be exposed to certain infectious diseases that are less common in Australia. Vaccines are designed to help protect you against these infections by preparing your immune system.

In some cases, a vaccine you have previously received may have weakened over time. If so, a booster vaccine may be recommended to help strengthen your protection.

Travel Immunisation Programs, Made Easy

We're here to make travel vaccinations as straightforward as possible, and the earlier you plan, the better. We recommend reaching out at least six to eight weeks before your departure date.

1. Contact Our Team

Book an initial consultation and make sure to bring your travel itinerary, vaccination records, and details of any medications you take regularly.

2. Tailored Advice

Our team will provide personalised advice, taking into account your travel destination, itinerary, accommodation style, planned activities, medical history, and any allergies.

3. On-site Vaccinations

Where appropriate, vaccinations may be administered on-site with little to no waiting time. Please allow 20 minutes after your consultation, so that you may leave fully prepared.

Common Travel Medicine Questions

  • What vaccines should I have before travelling overseas?

As a starting point, we recommend that most adults check that their tetanus, measles, mumps, and rubella vaccinations are up to date before travelling.

  • Do I need a yellow fever vaccination?

Yellow fever vaccination is a requirement for entry into certain countries. Whether you need a yellow fever vaccination will depend on your destination and travel itinerary.

Our team may provide specific advice based on where you are travelling and how long you plan to stay.

  • What is the BCG vaccine, and do I need it?

The BCG vaccination helps protect against tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infection that can spread through the air. It may be recommended for certain travellers depending on their destination, length of stay, and planned activities.

  • Should I be concerned about mosquito-borne illnesses when travelling?

Mosquito bites can transmit a range of illnesses, including malaria and Japanese encephalitis, depending on where you are travelling.

Our team may assess your risk and recommend appropriate precautions, including vaccinations and other preventive strategies where relevant.

  • Do I need any vaccinations if I am expecting a baby or will be around a newborn?

For adults who are expecting, or who will be spending time around a newborn, a combination whooping cough and tetanus vaccination is recommended.

  • What happens if you don't have the vaccine I need?

If a required vaccination is not available at our clinic, we will do our best to point you in the right direction so that you may be able to access it elsewhere in a timely manner.
